The Best Butter Board Recipes And Ideas

October 12, 2022 by Shellie Wilson

Butter boards are trending on TikTok right now, but don’t let that stop you from enjoying some old-fashioned butter, in a very new way.  Justine is believed to be the original butter board gal and you can see her butter board recipe tutorial here.

Butter makes everything taste better, is my life motto, so it is only fitting that I dedicate this week’s writing to Butter boards and butter board recipes and ideas.

Let’s start with the basics, what is a butter board? Literally, butter spread out onto a wooden board, or platter dish. Then it is layered with flavors, a little like the old 3 bean-layered Mexican dips, layers of flavors are added to butter to create a share-style dip.

How do you eat a butter board? Butter boards are a share platter style, placed in the middle of the table, it is best served with crusty bread or crackers. Try eating your butter board with potato chips or homemade baked potato skins for a heavier meal option.   Peel potatoes leaving 1/2 inch of the potato flesh, add salt, drizzle olive oil and bake in the oven until soft or use an air fryer to create crips potato skins.

Butter is a dairy product made from the fat and protein components of churned cream so traditionally butter is not vegan but you can use vegan butter to create vegan and dairy-free butter boards.

How do I make my own butter?  You don’t need fancy tools to create your own butter,  Rich, delicious butter can be made using heavy cream and a few simple kitchen items.  So what is the actual process of turning cream into butter?  What you’re doing is separating the fat from the milk. You can use a blender, a stand mixer or hand mixer, or just shake by hand in a mason jar. Personally I like using a small Butter churn. so I feel lke I am back on the farm.
To make your own butter all you need is 1 pint heavy whipping cream, some salt to taste and muscle power. Blend, churn or mix until it becomes solid and the fats seperate, then place into a container and chill your homeamde butter.

Is it cheaper to make your own butter?  Well this depends on how much you are paying for your cream, but in all honesty making your own butter, and telling people that you made your own butter is priceless. Especially when using it for a DIY butter board, where the hero is the butter, so it makes  sense that you put the most effort into the “Butter” part of the chaciature butter board.   So is making your own butter worth it? 100%, making your own butter is rewarding and delicious.
How long does DIY butter last? If it is refrigerated then it will last 7-10 days.

So when making your butter boards, you can create a base layer with homemade butter, store-bought butter or even homemade flavored butter. Here is a great article sharing 5 different butter flavors you can make and have on hand to create your own butter board.
The first thing you need to create your butter board is softened butter, it should be spreadable to allow you to place it onto the base of the board or platter dish.   Everything else on top of the base layer is going to be to your own tastes, think about what you like on your crusty bread.  Maybe it’s sweet, maybe it savory, maybe it’s just butter and salt with some pastrami or bacon bits.

One of the most famous of all add-ons is edible flowers, but you can use rosemary leaves, mint leaves or other herbs for a decorative edible flower look at the fraction of the cost to make your butter board.

Then layer your butter board.
Here are some ingredients you can add to your butter board.
Cheese – Ricotta cheese, Cream cheese, goats cheese, blue cheese chunks,
Sweet – Honey, fig jam, dates, Balsamic vinegar, nuts, raisins, cranberries dried fruit.
Spice –  Salsa, chili flakes, fresh peppers.

So once you have made your butter board how do you store it? It should be wrapped and stored in the fridge, depending on your toppings it can be made a few days in advance, any biscuits or moist items should be added before serving.  To serve your butter board simply take it out of the fridge 30 mins before serving to bring the butter up to room temperature.
