This evening marks the start of the Jewish holiday of Purim. Purim is one of the most joyous and fun holidays on the Jewish calendar. It commemorates a time when the Jewish people living in Persia were saved from extermination.
There are many fun customs to this holiday, the children dress up in costumes and go to Purim parties, Jewish people give one another food gifts (another fun edible craft) and of course there is a special food for this holiday – hamentashen (the name outside of Israel) and in Hebrew they are known an Ozney Haman – but no matter what these yummy pastries are called they are always delicious. They are triangular shaped and have all sorts of different fillings, for example dates, chocolate, poppy seeds, jams…anything goes, it depends on how creative you are.
