Let us start off by telling you what a chaffle is in case you do not know.
Chaffle = Cheese and Egg = Waffle
Chaffles are the Keto alternative to waffles, bread, cake and desserts. These little beauties start off with the basic recipe, either sweet or savory and then you can change them up to create different meals. Even a keto pizza base!
So as the name suggests you do need a waffle iron to make a chaffle that looks like a chaffle. obviously you can throw this mix into a frying pan for similar (but nowhere near as good results).
Some Keto enthusiasts argue about the best Waffle irons based on the chaffle size and thickness. If you already have a waffle iron then use what you have, no need to buy another one. If you are looking to buy a waffle iron then I suggest purchasing a waffle iron that is not too deep. Like this waffle iron here. I also like this waffle iron because it is single serve which is especially good if you are the only person in your house doing Keto diet. But let me say, every time I make chaffles my family wanted a bite, a taste, a half. So I went and purchased a family sized larger waffle iron. That makes 4 at a time. Round waffle irons are great for burger buns too.
If you are slightly crazy and need your chaffles to come in a crazy shapes then check these out. The Japanese Koh fish have to be my favorite. You can’t really load them up with syrup and fruit though.
Tips for cooking chaffles
Okay onto the actual chaffles recipes. Before you begin here are my top Chaffle making tips for making perfect Keto Chaffles.
Patience, when they are cooking and when they are cooling. Like most keto baked items they need time to set, so allowing the cheese to firm up once your chaffle is out of the waffle iron helps them to be firm and stable. Want chaffles that don’t get stuck? Stop peaking at them, every time you lift the lid you mess it up.
Too Eggy? Use egg whites or more flavouring depending on the recipe.
Too Sweet? Lots of the sweet recipes use small amounts of fruit, peanut butter or other add-ins. These add ins will taste sweet naturally to a true Keto dieter. Adding more fake sugar can make them overwhelmingly sweet, so check your taste buds first. If you want to add sweetener then I highly recommend Monkfruit.
