Cookies appear to have their origins in the 7th century AD Persia, shortly after the use of sugar became relatively common in the region. They spread to Europe through the Muslim conquest of Spain. By the 14th century, they were common in all levels of society throughout Europe, from royal cuisine to street vendors. Vanilla cookies are always a crowd-pleaser cookie – not too chocolatey, not too sweet. While the name may seem plain, these 15 cookie recipes are anything but. Making vanilla cookies with my family has always been one of my favorite things to do. From the moment I was old enough to stand on a chair and help, I was always eager to be a part of the process.
We would always start by gathering the ingredients: butter, sugar, eggs, flour, baking powder, and of course, the fragrant vanilla. My siblings and I would have a great time measuring out the ingredients and stirring them together. But the best part was when we would get to lick the spoon and bowl of batter.
Then came the fun of rolling out the dough and using the cookie cutters to make all sorts of shapes. We would always make the traditional circle and star shapes, but also get creative and make a few unique ones. My mom would be in charge of baking the cookies, making sure they were perfectly golden brown.
The house would be filled with the sweet smell of vanilla cookies and I couldn’t wait for them to be ready. As soon as they were done, we would all gather around the kitchen table and enjoy the delicious cookies that we had made together.
Making vanilla cookies with my family was always a special occasion. It not only allowed us to enjoy a sweet treat together but also to spend quality time with each other. As I grew older, the tradition of making vanilla cookies with my family has continued and I look forward to it every year.
