How to Throw an Oscar Party

February 20, 2009 by Meaghan Mountford

There’s still time to throw together a fabulous party for the Oscars before Sunday.

If you’ve never thrown an Oscar Party before, trust me—you’re in for a treat. A few years back, my girlfriends and I decided to put one together “just for fun,” and honestly… it ended up being one of the most memorable nights we’ve ever had. There’s something about everyone gathering around the TV with snacks, bubbly, and loud opinions about red-carpet outfits that makes the whole night feel like a big cozy celebration. We had scorecards for our favourite categories, a massive grazing board, and way too much laughter—especially when we all tried to predict the winners and failed miserably.

That’s the charm of an Oscar Party, though. You don’t need to be a film buff. You just need good company, easy food, and an excuse to wear something a little fancy (or stay in your comfiest lounge pants—I don’t judge). Whether you’re planning an intimate girls’ night like mine or going all-out with themed décor and cocktails, it’s such a fun way to turn an ordinary Sunday night into something sparkly and special.

If you’re thinking about hosting your own, here are some simple, creative ideas to help you throw an Oscar-worthy event without any stress. Grab your popcorn, pick your favourites, and let’s get the party started!

First, delish.com has a list of ten easy appetizers like mini cheesecakes.

The nest offers a five step plan to throwing a party, including ideas for champagne, drinking games, menus, and decor.

Sunset.com has ideas for an Indian-spiced Oscar party and a full menu party with an opening act, red carpet cocktails, diva and hero courses, as well as a finale.

Celebrations.com has a huge list of ideas including menus, games, favors and trivia.

Evite, as always, has Oscar party ideas beyond invitations.

Simply Stated, Real Simple’s blog, has a page devoted to Awards Parties and different themes, decor, and cocktail recipes.

And lastly, How About Orange has a great pdf for Oscars Bingo.
