The Ubiquitous Yoo-Hoo Cocktail

February 24, 2009 by Meaghan Mountford

Is there nothing Yoo-Hoo can’t make better? The Daily Loaf shares with us this recipe for a Hooville Martini, as found in the “Southwest Airlines Spirit” magazine. And our blogger is kind enough to also provide some other inspiring ideas to make classics into cocktails, like adding rum to a root beer float.

By the way, you can read the history of the yoo-hoo here, from its humble beginnings in New Jersey in the early 20th century.

Whether you grew up with Yoo-Hoo in your lunchbox, sipped it at the corner store on the way home from school, or only discovered its quirky charm as an adult, there’s no denying that this little chocolate drink has staying power. It’s one of those treats that somehow manages to feel both retro and completely timeless. And honestly? That’s what makes it so fun to play with—especially when it comes to turning it into something new, silly, or a bit unexpected, like a Yoo-Hoo martini or dessert drink.

If you decide to try any of these ideas—or to make your own twist using Yoo-Hoo as the base—don’t be afraid to get creative. Add a scoop of ice cream, swirl in some flavored syrup, spike it for an adults-only version, or keep it purely nostalgic and kid-friendly. Part of the magic is leaning into the playful side of things and letting that childhood joy come through.

And if you haven’t had Yoo-Hoo in years, this is your sign to pick up a bottle the next time you’re out. Chill it, shake it, pour it over ice, dress it up, or enjoy it straight from the bottle like we all used to. However you sip it, it’s a small moment of simple, chocolatey happiness—and sometimes that’s exactly what we need.

If you come up with a fun Yoo-Hoo recipe or party idea of your own, make sure to share it. We love seeing creative spins on nostalgic favorites, and who knows—you might just inspire the next quirky chocolate-drink trend. Cheers to keeping the classics alive… one Yoo-Hoo at a time!

Yoo-Hoo Cocktail Variations

Perfect for parties, girls’ nights, or just because!

1. The Yoo-Hoo Mudslide

Rich, creamy, and dangerously easy to sip.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup chilled Yoo-Hoo

  • 1 oz coffee liqueur

  • 1 oz Irish cream

  • Ice

  • Chocolate syrup (optional drizzle)

Instructions:
Shake everything with ice and strain into a cold glass.
Drizzle chocolate syrup inside the glass first for extra decadence.
Top with whipped cream if you’re feeling fancy.

2. Yoo-Hoo Chocolate Martini

Your childhood favorite… all grown up.

Ingredients:

  • ¾ cup Yoo-Hoo

  • 1.5 oz vanilla vodka

  • 1 oz chocolate liqueur

  • Cocoa powder for the rim

Instructions:
Run the bottle rim in a little Yoo-Hoo and dip into cocoa powder.
Shake all ingredients with ice and strain.
It’s simple, sweet, and surprisingly classy.

3. Boozy Yoo-Hoo Float

Like a root beer float, but with chocolate and attitude.

Ingredients:

  • Half a bottle of cold Yoo-Hoo

  • 1 shot of spiced rum or bourbon

  • 1 big scoop vanilla ice cream

  • Chocolate sprinkles (obviously)

Instructions:
Add the ice cream to your glass, pour the rum, then top with Yoo-Hoo.
The fizzy, creamy mix is pure joy.

4. Frozen Yoo-Hoo Mud Pie Slush

A blended treat that tastes like dessert and a cocktail in one.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Yoo-Hoo (freeze into cubes for best texture)

  • 1 oz vodka or bourbon

  • 1 oz chocolate liqueur

  • 1 tbsp chocolate pudding mix (trust me)

  • Ice as needed

Instructions:
Blend everything until thick and slushy.
Serve in a sundae glass with crushed cookies on top.
This one always impresses.

5. Yoo-Hoo White Russian Twist

Creamy, chocolatey, and slightly grown-up.

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup Yoo-Hoo

  • 1 oz vodka

  • 1 oz coffee liqueur

  • A splash of half-and-half

Instructions:
Pour over ice in a rocks glass.
Stir gently and top with an extra dash of Yoo-Hoo.
A fun, sweet riff on the classic.

6. Fireball Yoo-Hoo Hot Chocolate Shot

A warm cinnamon-chocolate shot perfect for winter.

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup warmed Yoo-Hoo

  • 1 oz Fireball

  • Dash of cinnamon

  • Mini marshmallows

Instructions:
Warm the Yoo-Hoo gently on the stovetop.
Add the Fireball, sprinkle cinnamon, and top with marshmallows.
Serve in mini mugs or shot glasses.

7. The Grown-Up Yoo-Hoo Shake

Dessert in a glass, and absolutely party-worthy.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Yoo-Hoo

  • 1 cup vanilla ice cream

  • 1 oz chocolate vodka

  • 1 oz crème de cacao

  • Whipped cream + chocolate chips

Instructions:
Blend until smooth.
Top with whipped cream and chocolate chips.
Serve with a straw and a spoon. You’ll need both.

Is it odd that I’ve never actually tasted Yoohoo before? Maybe now I should try it.
