Something that has become more and more clear to me over the past year–from starting my own online biz, my own blog and from mining the internet for great food sites–is the importance of good photography. The difference between a gorgeous photograph and one that is overexposed or poorly lit or any of the other bad photography terms I don’t know can be the secret to the success of a good store or blog. You could have the most wonderful creation in the world and a poor photograph will not only fail to convey your brilliance, but it will tarnish the creation. I think this extends beyond food, and all crafters can learn from food stylists, whether you have a store on etsy, your own blog, or you want to submit your work to other blogs.
I know very little about photography, but I have begged for the Canon G7 for my birthday, though I do dread having to reshoot allll of my online photographs (a definite necessity). In anticipation of getting my wish, I have started to search the internet for photography tips, specifically how to shoot close-ups of food. I even made my own lightbox with the instructions found here. I thought I would share some of the sites I’ve found.
The Kitchen Wench has great tips (and a great blog…while you’re there)
A great introduction at Digital Photography School
Tons of stuff at “Still Life With”
Food Photo 101 (Nikas Culinaria) has many links
Good luck!
