Summer of Custom Candy Creations sells her candy on her Etsy shop. She also has a local customer base. She has a few people who contact her for every big event & holiday that comes up. Most of the time they pick up right from her house and end up hanging out and chatting a bit.
Summer started making candy when she saw a recipe in a family magazine for hard candy and decided to give it a go. “It came out pretty good, but I wanted to play with the ingredients and flavorings a bit. I was a single Mom at the time, living in a small apartment and after experimenting for a while my daughter (now 11) suggested selling them to help make extra money. She would take them to school and share them with friends and they loved the suckers so I decided to send some out to people I had met online. Their response was very positive so I started up a website”, she recalls.
All the cooking & packing is done in her kitchen. “My grandma likes to help with the packaging – she comes over a few times a week to pitch in (and see the kids!)”.
When Summer first started making candy she was working a full time 3rd shift at a national retailer, and working part time with an inventory company. When she met the man who is now her husband she dropped down to one job. A bad car accident caused Summer chronic back pain which eventually led to her leaving her job a few months before their daughter was born. She never went back and has been making candy ever since.
Custom Candy Creation’s biggest sellers are character shapes – usually for kids birthday parties, followed by the specific holiday shapes – Easter, Christmas, Valentines.
Summer also makes almond toffee bark, and a chocolate fanatics dream – super chocolate toffee. It’s chocolate butter toffee topped with melted chocolate, and mini chocolate chips on top of that. “Once people try it they always come back for more – truly a decadent treat!”.
