Welsh cakes have been a staple in Welsh households since the late 19th century. They were traditionally prepared on a bakestone—a thick, flat piece of stone or cast iron heated on an open fire—which provided a consistent cooking surface. This method was integral to their development and is reflected in some of their Welsh names, such as pice bach and teisennau gradell, which reference the bakestone.
