Yesterday a friend of mine asked me how to make a butterfly cake. I made one for my younger daughter’s second birthday, and remember how long it took me to decide how to decorate it. Deciding what kind of cake to make was a piece of cake (I just had to), it had to be a chocolate cake, what kid doesn’t like chocolate, right? But the decorating part was different, I wanted something pretty, and easy, so of course I turned to the internet for help. I ended up making a pretty simple cake, using a big round chocolate cake for the wings, which I cut in half and then cut pieces out the middle of both sides, and put together “back to back”, I put a Flake chocolate bar down the middle as the body, used toothpicks with mini marshmallows on them for feelers and decorated with icing and marshmallows. And of course the birthday girl loved the cake!
It seems that most people are asked to make a butterfly cake at some time or another, for their child, niece or nephew or even for a friend, so I thought I would go back to the net and look for some fun ideas for decorating butterfly cakes to post.
