Spider Pizza Appetizer: Easy Halloween Bread Bowl and Dip

October 14, 2011 by Meaghan Mountford

I love a Halloween food idea that brings a little fun to the table without turning dinner into another sweet treat. This spider pizza appetizer does exactly that, with golden breadstick legs, a round bread-bowl body and warm pizza sauce for dipping.

It’s the sort of centrepiece that gets everyone talking before they start pulling it apart. The bread bowl holds the sauce, the legs become dippers, and a little bread-roll head with olive eyes gives the whole thing its spooky personality.

The idea was originally featured in Woman’s Day as Saucy Spider with Hairy Leg Sticks. That original recipe link is currently unavailable, but I’ve kept it here to credit the inspiration. The method below is my simplified adaptation using a bakery loaf and ready-made pizza dough.

If you’re planning a Halloween party, this makes a lovely savoury addition alongside the cupcakes, biscuits and bags of sweets. You can also put it on the table before trick-or-treating, with extra breadsticks and vegetables for dipping.

Ingredients and Supplies

  • 1 small round crusty bread loaf
  • 1 small bread roll for the spider’s head
  • 400–500 g ready-made pizza dough
  • 1–1½ cups thick pizza sauce or marinara sauce
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons finely grated Parmesan, optional
  • ½ teaspoon dried Italian herbs, optional
  • 1 pitted black olive, cut into two pieces for the eyes
  • Extra bread or vegetable sticks for serving

You’ll also need a baking tray, baking paper, bread knife, small saucepan and a large serving platter.

How to Make a Spider Pizza Appetizer

1. Shape the Breadstick Legs

Divide the pizza dough into eight roughly equal pieces. Roll each piece into a breadstick, then place it on a baking tray lined with baking paper.

Curve each breadstick into a gentle bend to suggest a spider’s leg. Leave space between them so they can expand during baking.

2. Season and Bake

Brush the legs lightly with olive oil. Sprinkle with grated Parmesan and dried herbs if you’d like a little extra flavour and texture.

Bake according to the pizza dough’s packet instructions, checking that the breadsticks are golden and cooked through. Let them cool enough to handle before assembling the spider.

3. Prepare the Bread Bowl

Cut a lid from the top of the round loaf. Carefully remove some of the soft bread from inside, leaving a thick base and sturdy sides.

Keep the bread you remove and cut it into pieces for dipping. Avoid hollowing the loaf too deeply, as it needs to hold the sauce.

4. Assemble Your Spider

Place the bread bowl in the centre of your serving platter. Arrange four breadstick legs on each side, with their inner ends close to the loaf.

Position the small bread roll at the front for the head. Make two shallow slits in the roll and gently press an olive piece into each one to create the eyes.

The legs can simply rest on the platter beside the body, which makes them easy for guests to pick up.

5. Fill With Warm Pizza Sauce

Heat the sauce in a small saucepan, stirring until hot. Spoon it into the bread bowl just before serving.

Arrange the reserved bread pieces, extra breadsticks or vegetable sticks around the spider, ready for dipping.

Tips for a Better Spider Bread Bowl

Choose a sturdy loaf. A round loaf with a firm crust will hold its shape better once it’s hollowed out and filled.

Keep the sauce thick. A watery sauce will soak into the bread more quickly. Use a thick pizza sauce or gently simmer a thinner sauce to reduce it before filling the bowl.

Make a few spare legs. Eight legs create the spider, but they may disappear quickly! Extra breadsticks let everyone keep dipping without immediately dismantling the bread bowl.

Fill it at the last moment. You can bake the legs ahead of time, but add the hot sauce just before serving to keep the bread from becoming too soft.

Easy Ways to Change It Up

For garlic bread legs, brush the dough with a little garlic butter before baking, following the dough’s cooking instructions.

If you prefer a milder flavour, use a smooth tomato sauce and leave off the herbs. You can also put a little grated mozzarella in a separate bowl for guests to sprinkle over their dipped bread.

For a bigger party platter, add cucumber sticks, pepper strips and more bread pieces around the spider. Keep the arrangement loose enough that guests can reach the dippers easily.

This is one of those Halloween ideas where a little personality goes a long way. A slightly crooked leg or an uneven pair of olive eyes only adds to the charm. Once the warm sauce is in the bowl and everyone starts helping themselves, you have a playful savoury snack that’s as much fun to share as it is to make.
