Slow Cooker Scalloped Potatoes: A Creamy Side Dish That Frees Up Your Oven

November 10, 2016 by Carolyn Bickford

There’s something wonderfully comforting about a spoonful of scalloped potatoes alongside dinner. Tender potato slices, a creamy sauce and plenty of flavour make this the sort of side dish that suits a Sunday roast just as well as a festive gathering.

But when you’re cooking several dishes at once, oven space can become surprisingly precious. The roast needs one temperature, the vegetables need another, and there’s still a dish of potatoes waiting for its turn. That’s why slow cooker scalloped potatoes are such a handy idea to keep in your meal-planning collection.

This recipe from Elizabeth at Bowl of Delicious brings the potatoes to the slow cooker, leaving your oven available for the rest of the meal. Her version combines red potatoes with Gruyère, Parmesan, onion and thyme for a rich, savoury side dish. It’s a lovely option for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter or a family dinner when you want something a little more indulgent than boiled potatoes.

What appeals to me is having one part of dinner underway while I get on with everything else. There’s still some slicing and layering involved, but once the dish is assembled, you can turn your attention to the main course, set the table or enjoy a little time with your guests.

About This Slow Cooker Potato Recipe

Elizabeth’s recipe serves eight and uses thinly sliced, unpeeled red potatoes. A milk-and-broth sauce thickened with flour coats the layers, while two cheeses add richness.

Allow approximately five hours on HIGH, followed by a 15-minute uncovered rest. Treat the cooking time as a guide and check that the potatoes are tender before serving, as slow cookers vary.

Tips for Planning Your Meal

Start with the potatoes so their longer cooking time fits comfortably into your schedule. Before you begin, check that you have enough space in your slow cooker for the recipe rather than packing the insert too tightly.

Slice the potatoes as evenly as possible to help them cook consistently. If you use a mandoline, use its guard.

Keep the lid in place during cooking and allow time for the rest specified in the recipe. That short pause is useful when you’re finishing the other dishes and getting everyone to the table.

What to Serve With Scalloped Potatoes

A rich potato side pairs nicely with a simple main course and vegetables. Try serving it alongside roast chicken, ham or your favourite roast, with green beans, steamed broccoli or a crisp salad to round out the meal.

For a holiday gathering, plan the rest of your menu around the equipment you have available. Letting the slow cooker handle one side dish can make the kitchen feel considerably less crowded.

A Comforting Side Worth Bookmarking

You don’t need a special occasion to put scalloped potatoes on the menu, but they’re particularly welcome when there’s a full table to feed. A generous serving of potatoes can make a straightforward meal feel warm and inviting.

Save this recipe for your next family dinner or holiday gathering, and leave yourself plenty of cooking time. Having the potatoes simmering away separately gives you a little more room to organise the rest of the meal—and that’s always welcome when the kitchen gets busy.
