Make Your Own Irish Creme

March 4, 2009 by Meaghan Mountford

I’ll have a second St. Patty’s Day roundup devoted to the cocktail, but this homemade Irish Creme from the blog, the Hungry Mouse, needed it’s own post, I think, given the clever combo of recipe, photography, and cool idea. Find the recipe and step-by-steps (with accompanying photographs!) here.

I don’t know about you, but every year around March I get the urge to whip up something cozy, creamy, and a little bit indulgent… and homemade Irish crème never disappoints. I’ve made this for friends, taken it to girls’ nights, and even handed out little bottles as last-minute gifts. Without fail, someone always asks, “Wait—you made this?”

Yep. It’s that good.

What I love about making Irish crème at home is how easy it is. You only need a handful of ingredients, the flavor is rich and velvety, and you can tweak it to your taste—more chocolate, less whiskey, extra coffee… whatever makes your heart happy. Plus, it keeps beautifully in the fridge, so you can make a batch ahead of St. Patrick’s Day and enjoy it all month long.

This recipe from The Hungry Mouse captures that perfect balance of creaminess and warm Irish whiskey, without being cloyingly sweet or overly heavy. It tastes miles better than the store-bought versions, and once you see how simple it is, you’ll wonder why you never tried it sooner.

Why You’ll Love Homemade Irish Crème

  •  5 minutes of prep

  •  No fancy equipment

  •  Cheaper than store-bought

  •  Perfect for gifting

  •  Absolutely delicious over ice, in coffee, or blended into desserts

It also makes a gorgeous DIY hostess gift. Pour it into little glass bottles, tie on a ribbon, add a handwritten tag, and you’re done. It feels thoughtful, but secretly took you almost no time at all.

How to Use Your Homemade Irish Crème

This is the fun part—Irish crème isn’t just for sipping!

Here are some creative ways to use it:

 Stir Into Coffee

Turn your morning coffee into a cozy treat. A tablespoon or two works wonders on a chilly day.

 Pour Over Ice Cream

Vanilla ice cream + Irish crème = heavenly.

Add to Brownie Batter or Frosting

A splash adds richness and depth without overpowering the chocolate.

 Blend Into Cocktails

Mix it with cold brew, vodka, or your favorite liqueur for an easy dessert drink.

 Bottle It for Gifts

Perfect for teachers, neighbors, or last-minute hostess gifts.

Tips for the Best Homemade Irish Crème

  • Use good whiskey — it doesn’t need to be expensive, but choose one you wouldn’t mind sipping.

  • Don’t overblend — high-speed mixing can cause curdling. Use low speed or whisk gently.

  • Always refrigerate — it stays fresh for about 2 weeks.

  • Give it a shake before using — the ingredients settle naturally.

Make It Festive

If you’re gifting for St. Patrick’s Day or Christmas, add:

  • A sprinkle of cocoa powder on top

  • A touch of green ribbon

  • A printable recipe card

  • A small charm tied around the bottle neck

Tiny details make it feel extra special.

Final Sip…

Homemade Irish crème is one of those kitchen projects that feels fancy but is unbelievably quick and satisfying. Once you try making your own, you may never go back to the store-bought version.

And if you decide to gift it… prepare yourself. People will absolutely ask for refills.
