It’s All in the Supplies

November 2, by Meaghan Mountford. Leave a Comment

I thought I might periodically post on what’s behind the many of the items you see on this blog. Without the right supplies, you can’t create amazing edible crafts. I’ll share some of the great products and sites I’ve found, and feel free to send me tips on great products and sites you’ve found.

First, color for your frosting. I swear, I’ve touted the virtues of Americolor Soft Gel Pastes so often people are going to think I have a stake in the company. (I don’t. Promise.) I only use these soft gel pastes. They are tasteless, blend beautifully and come in any color you like. I much prefer them to concentrated pastes. Concentrated pastes are a bit cheaper and are more widely available at craft stores, but they just taste way too metallic to me. The Americolor web site has a “Links” page to give you tips on where to buy, and specialty cake decorating stores in your home town might carry them, too.

Next, cookie cutters. I love coppergifts.com and thecookiecuttershop.com. You can find just about any shape imaginable between these two stores, from aardvarks to zebras. No, really. Aardvarks. And zebras. Coppergifts.com sells over 1000 tiny to large handmade and hand soldered copper cutters. You can’t beat the quality and long life of these cutters. The Cookie Cutter Shop has smaller, metal cutters, which are friendly to the purse. They also have an amazing selection. Plus, the customer service at both of these shops is top notch.

Lastly, Wilton serves as the cake and cookie decorator’s solid foundation. You can find everything you could possibly need at wilton. I especially prefer (and ONLY use) their disposable decorating bags and metal tips. The tips resist rust and wear better than any other I’ve used.

There are so many great resources out there, so look for more posts like this in the future!
