World’s largest cake decorating competition set to be even bigger for 2019

Entries are now open for the world’s biggest and most prestigious cake decoration competition, Cake International. The global showcase will return to NEC, Birmingham 1st – 3rd November bringing together the world’s leading cake decorating talents.

The number of entries for 2019 is expected to exceed 2,000 with competitors flying in from across the globe. 2018 saw 1,980 entries from as far as Indonesia, India, China, Argentina, South Korea and the USA. Open to anyone, the competition entries are a highlight of the show celebrating the creativity and skill of cake decorators worldwide.

For those looking to get involved, there is a wide range of categories now open for entry. From delicate sugar flower creators, to those wanting to build a show stopping creation with bells and whistles on, to those celebrating traditional techniques or exploring new trends. Including classes for junior entrants and beginners the full list can be found here.

With a team of expert judges, the judging process is serious, lengthy and thorough. Once a cake has been scored by a class judge judged, a senior judge must check over to confirm the given score. is allocated to each category who is responsible for checking everything again. If there’s a query or concern, other senior judges can be brought in to reassess.

Melanie Underwood, show organiser, Cake International said: “From jaw-dropping giant cake creations to delicate floral work and wedding cakes, competitors from across the globe will be working hard to achieve the most beautiful and creative works of art. The judging process is like no other cake competition, with a huge team of highly trained judges. The Best in Show winner will walk away with a trophy and £2,500, the largest cash prize in Europe of this type of competition. For any cake decorating enthusiast, from beginner to expert, this is the competition to take part in.”

Karen Keaney won Best in Show in 2017 and has since even taken the role of Head Judge at! Karen said: “After entering the competition myself many times, I was fortunate enough to win Best in Show. The prizes vary from show to show also but just to enter is magic. You really feel part of something unique and special.”
