DIY Tea Bag Christmas Tree Gift – A Festive Treat for Tea Lovers

October 29, 2025 by Shellie Wilson

The holidays always sneak up on us, don’t they? One minute you’re finishing the Halloween candy, and the next you’re hunting for thoughtful, affordable gifts that don’t feel “last-minute.” That’s why I adore making these DIY Tea Bag Christmas Trees — they’re festive, inexpensive, and just the right blend of practical and whimsical.

Each one looks like a little Christmas tree perched on a mug, stacked with layers of individually wrapped tea bags, decorated with pom-poms as ornaments, and topped with a star. They’re easy to assemble, fun to customize, and perfect for anyone who loves a cozy cup of tea.

A Gift That Warms More Than Hands

I often make a batch of these to take to the local nursing home where my daughter works. They’re such a sweet way to spread holiday cheer in a place where small touches make a big difference.

The best part is that the residents can share them — each tree holds plenty of tea bags, so it becomes a communal gift. They gather together for a cup, enjoy the seasonal colors, and it sparks conversation. It turns into more than just a mug of tea; it becomes a little moment of connection.

And here’s a tip from experience: I keep an eye out for tea bag sales throughout the year. By the time Christmas rolls around, I’ve usually gathered a cheerful assortment without spending much at all.

If you are also a tea lover, check out this Tea Advent calender I bought 2, one for me and one for my mother, so we can sip tea at the same time and chat on the phone about the flavour. Shh she doesn’t know yet.

Supplies You’ll Need

  • A holiday-themed mug

  • 12–20 individually wrapped tea bags (different flavors or matching sets)

  • Ribbon

  • Hot glue gun or double-sided tape (optional)

  • Mini pom-poms, beads, or sequins

  • A star topper (glitter star, felt cutout, or even a cookie cutter)

  • Bow and gift tag

How to Make a Tea Bag Christmas Tree

Step 1 – Start with the base
Choose a sturdy, festive mug. Plaid, buffalo check, or simple “Merry Christmas” wording works perfectly.

Step 2 – Build your tree
Layer the tea bags around the mug in a cone shape, overlapping them slightly. Work from the widest part at the bottom to the narrowest at the top.

Step 3 – Secure
Wrap each layer with ribbon to hold the tea bags in place. You can tape them if needed, but ribbon does the trick beautifully.

Step 4 – Decorate
Glue on mini pom-poms or beads to mimic ornaments. Don’t skip this step — it’s what makes it look truly like a little tree.

Step 5 – Topper
Add a bow and a star to the top for that classic Christmas tree silhouette.

Step 6 – Personal Touch
Tie on a gift tag with a warm holiday message. If you’re gifting to a group (like a workplace or nursing home), mention that it’s “meant to share.”

Fun Variations

  • Mix flavors: Alternate herbal teas, fruit teas, and green teas for a striped effect.

  • Match the mug: Choose tea flavors that coordinate with the color of your mug.

  • Wellness theme: Use calming blends for a “self-care” tree.

  • Cocoa version: Try hot chocolate sachets instead of tea bags for kids.

There’s something so satisfying about a craft that looks more complicated than it is. These Tea Bag Christmas Tree gifts check all the boxes: affordable, adorable, practical, and heartwarming. They’re the kind of gift you can make in an afternoon while sipping your own cup of tea.

And honestly? Watching the residents at the nursing home light up when they receive one reminds me that the best gifts don’t have to be extravagant — they just have to be thoughtful.
