Copycat Sizzler Cheese Toast Recipe – Bring Back the Family Favorite

August 25, 2025 by Shellie Wilson

If you grew up in the 80s or 90s, chances are you celebrated more than a few milestones with a trip to Sizzler. Birthdays, graduations, anniversaries, even just a little “I passed my maths test!” moment—it all called for a family night out. And no matter what you ordered, the real star of the show was always that famous cheese toast.

Golden, buttery, crispy on one side and fluffy on the other, it wasn’t just bread. It was the taste of togetherness. It was the thing you snuck seconds (and thirds) of while waiting for your salad bar plate to balance itself under the weight of pasta, potato skins, and jelly cubes. For many of us, Sizzler was where families came together to celebrate big and small wins, and their signature cheese toast is wrapped up in those memories.

The good news? You don’t need to hunt down a Sizzler or wait for a family birthday to enjoy it again. This copycat Sizzler cheese toast recipe will take you right back to those golden days, right in your own kitchen.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • 1 loaf of thick-cut white bread (Texas Toast style is best)
  • ½ cup salted butter, softened (room temperature)
  • ½ cup finely grated pecorino Romano cheese (don’t skip this—the flavor is key!)
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder (optional, but it does add a tasty kick)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Make the Cheese Butter

Mix your softened butter with the pecorino Romano and garlic powder until it’s a spreadable paste. The texture should be thick but easy to smear across bread.

Step 2: Spread Generously

Take your bread slices and coat one side only. That’s part of the Sizzler magic—it’s crispy and cheesy on one side, soft and fluffy on the other.

Step 3: Toast It Up

Heat a non-stick pan or flat griddle over medium heat. Place your bread cheese-side down. Let it toast for 2–3 minutes, pressing lightly with a spatula, until golden brown and bubbling.

Step 4: Serve Like Sizzler

Remove, slice diagonally (because we all remember it that way), and serve immediately.

Tips for the Perfect Sizzler Cheese Toast

  • Romano is non-negotiable – Parmesan works in a pinch, but pecorino Romano is what gives that salty, tangy bite.
  • Day-old bread crisps better – If you’ve got a loaf that’s just past its peak, this is the perfect way to use it.
  • Batch cooking tip – Make up a batch of the butter-cheese mix and keep it in the fridge. It will last for a week, and you can toast up slices whenever the craving strikes.

It’s not just cheese on bread—it’s the memories. For many of us, Sizzler was woven into the fabric of family life. Friday night treats after a long week, a post-sporting win dinner, or those birthday trips where you got to pick your dessert and stack your plate as high as you dared. Recreating this cheese toast is about more than taste—it’s about bringing back those family moments we all miss.

So, next time you want to relive those memories, or maybe create new ones with your own kids or grandkids, whip up a plate of this cheesy, golden goodness. Who knows—it might just become your new go-to way of saying, let’s celebrate.
