UPDATE: We have a winner!! Emily Flippin Maruna, comment number 11. Congratulations Emily!

Not too long ago, Lark Books gave one of our readers two books from their Homemade Living series: Canning and Preserving with Ashley English, and Keeping Chickens. Well, nooooow, they are giving one of you the next two books in the series: Home Dairy and Keeping Bees.

I’m pretty excited to have Home Dairy: All You Need to Know to Make Cheese, Yogurt, Butter and More, in my collection. My raves about the first two books apply here. I find comfort in Ms. English’s promise that “No matter whether you’re a city apartment dweller or an away-from-it-all denizen of the great outdoors, if you’ve got access to fresh milk, a source of heat, and a bit of cheesecloth, the pleasures of making your own dairy products are yours for the taking.” She includes a history of home dairy making, all the essential tools, a detailed look at ingredients, and recipes (including mac n’ cheese, score for me). With gorgeous photos to guide you, learn to make ghee, butter, creme fraiche, ricotta, chevre, gorgonzola, ice cream and so much more. She even includes home spa recipes.

Keeping Bees: All You Need to Know to Tend Hives, Harvest Honey and More highlights the significance of keeping bees, given one-third of our food depends “on the fastidious efforts of honeybees.” This book covers hive hierarchy, bee spaces, how to extract honey, honey-based recipes (chestnut soup, honeyed prawns and polenta, honey ice cream… yum), and profiles of beekeepers. And plenty of tips to avoid bee stings.

I would love to bee-keep! My dad use to up until I was a teen, and he just didn’t have the time to keep up with it. Some of my favorite memories were spending late summer evenings uncapping hive after hive till everything in the house was sticky with honey!
