We are days away from going back to school. Right now my biggest struggle is trying to get my teenager going to bed at a decent time. My other struggle is trying to figure out healthy after school snacks that she can do herself other than store bought.

Alison at Pint Sized Treasures has a quick snack that can also be a quick dinner meal on those busy nights. This would also be great for those in college. Save some money making this, rather than ordering pizza when dinner on campus wasn’t that great or they have the munches from late night studying. Great way to use up any leftover tortillas from taco night.

tap-water-safer-than-bottled-water

This is one of those questions that I don’t find hard to answer. If you go with all the rules governing tap water, in most of the developed world, than yes, tap water is safer than bottled water because government supplied water has to follow more stringent rules and restrictive practices than most of the rules that cover manufacturing and sale of bottled water.

In fact, in 25% of the cases, bottled water is nothing more than tap water.

The only reason you should be drinking bottled water is a) because you actually like the taste b) because of convenience.

Yet, bottled water has grown into a multi-billion industry where 25% of it is just tap water. I think that is a lot of marketing that has gone haywire pushing the benefits of bottled water over tap water, when there are no actual scientific facts or evidence to back it up with.

What are your thoughts?

Edible Feather Tutorial
Wafer paper is the same as rice paper and it is edible. You are able to purchase it on Amazon if you are interested in making these feathers or any other design. You can also create flowers or butterflies out of the wafer paper to decorate cakes with.

Cup of Dee Cakes shows us how to create the feather using parchment paper, scissors or Exacto knife and a feather pattern. I would probably get scissors that I use for baking only. She uses Tylose glue / Sassie Sap Glue, which you can also buy on Amazon, to adhere to wire to place on the cake.

Your guests will be amazed with your creativity, well at least my guests would be knowing my non talent.

Surprise! I really love this idea! Especially if you have someone special that lives far way or going to college!

Pauline from Club ChicaCircle shows us how to take a pop tab can and turn it into a birthday or any occasion surprise. As mentioned in the article, make sure to use a can that it is BPA free. She also suggest baking the cake in a 9×13 pan and then cutting it out with a can if you aren’t sure. Pauline is kind enough to provide a free printable label to use on your can. Donut Holes Apple Pops
Do you make special treats for the first day of school or have a back to school party?

Here is a cute idea that you can do while rushing around trying to buy new clothes or supplies.

Instead of trying to find time to making cake pops, use donut holes! Christina at Inspiration for Celebration came up with this idea, when she didn’t have time to buy the molds to make a cake pop.
The donut holes help you eliminate the cake step if you don’t have time to bake or it’s too hot out.

Check out Inspiration for Celebration for other great back to school ideas.

This would be cute for a fall party or an apple themed party. Click on the webpage in pink for directions and supplies.

I’m jumping on the bandwagon of using less processed foods. It is hard when you need quick meals on busy nights. I am finding lots of ideas for preparing meals to throw in the freezer. One of which is the homemade biscuit by Money Saving Mom.

You could make and bake the same day if you have the time. Also, readers have suggested cutting the biscuits in squares and using a pizza cutter. This way you don’t have to worry about re-rolling to use up the dough. Totally having a “Why didn’t I think of that!” moment.

One ingredient and a yummy result!

Autumn at It’s Always Autumn shows us how to take a can of sweet condensed milk and cook it in the oven for a delicious treat for apples, ice cream or brownies. This is a recipe that is best for us that try to multitask while cooking or afraid of the horror stories about heating the can on the stove or in a crock pot.

Great for dessert at a party and could also make a cute gift.
