Two of my favorite entities–Country Living and Sterling Publishing–have joined forces to give us a treat, Happy Halloween! This book has everything, and I mean everything, you need to spook, chill, carve, cook, sew, cut, serve, wear and decorate for Halloween. All of Country Living’s best Halloween ideas in 223 pages. Find tons of pumpkin carving ideas (including traditional, scary, silly, unique and refined), handmade decor, recipes for cocktails, drinks, treats and party fare, and how-tos for creating costumes.

Just a few things you can do with this book:

–carve flames into pumpkins for your fireplace

–make your own skeleton luminaries

–float tissue paper ghosts in your window

–create a gourd-topped candelabra

–make a haunted house for your kid’s party

–serve pumpkin bisque and apple and sage chicken at your grown-up party

–make and decorate your own fall-themed cakes

–dress your wee one up as Little Red Riding Hood or a scary lion

Now that I finally have a nice, roomy house full of decorating possibilities, once my kitchen is actually in place and our piles of boxes have cleared (having moved recently to a fixer-upper in desperate need of fixer-upping), I’ll be sure to use this book heartily and post more ideas. In the interim, you can find Happy Halloween! HERE at Sterling or HERE at amazon.com or your favorite book store or site, and click HERE for tons of Halloween ideas at Country Living.

Specifically, zoomorphism (which I HADN’T heard before). Junior Society posted today in honor Saxton Freymann and Joost Elffers, the veggie and fruit animal masters. See cauliflower sheep, eggplant penguins and more. Click here to see the post and book list by Freymann and Elffers.

I’m working on Cookie Book Number Two, and it is my dream to have Chronicle as my publisher. If you’ve not heard of Chronicle (could it be?) I suggest you click here immediately. Chronicle’s books are funky, hip, chic, unique, and beautifully crafted. All of them. Literally. All of them. (Did I mention obsession?) Anyone with a passing fancy in children’s books, crafts, travel, art and food will find something perfect at Chronicle.

And they have a blog! Click here. Look what you can learn to make there. This lovely deer head for your wall, as excerpted from the book, Dorm Decor. Not sure how this could be construed as “edible crafts,” though I’m sure I could reach the logic in a convoluted, slightly off way, but I just had to post anyway.

The blogger from “la prochaine fois” gives us the recipe for foccacia as adapted from the book, “The History of Bread,” by Bernard Dupaigne, as well as photographs of a more traditional version (with cheese!) and her darling, sculpted version.

I began this vegan cupcake search thanks to Cupcakes Take the Cake for linking us to these purpley vegan cupcakes, from Eurovision Nicola. Find the recipe here (link provided by the great Cupcakes Take the Cake). And further delving into the vegan cupcake world brought me to this popular book, Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World, by Isa Chandra Moskowitz and Terry Hope Romero. And look, they also have a blog here. Looks like it hasn’t been updated in awhile, but still chock full of information and tips.

The blogger has compiled a list of kid’s books with food, such as classics like “Green Eggs and Ham” to more modern tales like “The Story of Cherry the Pig.” And note, the illustration above, from the blog, was created by the blogger’s husband, whose drawings also appear in “I Wanna Iguana.”

Inspired by the entry, I did some of my own searching, too, and amazon.com has a list of Children’s Books About Food found here (including “Blueberries for Sal,” oh, remember “Blueberries for Sal”?). I can of course always share my paper for graduate school on food, consumption and the grotesque in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Alice in Wonderland, but I’m afraid I’d bore you off the subject.

With more and more resources on creating and decorating with food, crafters already interested in making fantastic things from bits and pieces are making fantastic things from food, especially sweets.

And so, the edible art guru at bakerella is at it again, trying her hand at cookie decorating.

I wish that someone had told me about this book before I planned out my daughter’s last birthday party! I only found out about this book today, and thought it best that I write a post about it asap, so that I can save anyone else out there who needs to plan a tea party for a little girl a lot of time and trouble.

The book is called Come to Tea: Fun Tea Party Themes, Recipes, Crafts, Games, Etiquette and More by Stephanie Dunnewind, Dan Potash (designer), and Capucine Mazille (Illustrator).

As I, unfortunately, haven’t had the opportunity to read the book myself, here is the book description from Amazon.com.

Drink from delicate cups, eat dainty finger foods, dress up in your finery, and be as polite as you can be: it’s time to come to tea. With the help of this oh-so charmingly illustrated guide, you can throw a delightful tea party for birthdays, holidays, or just to have fun with friends. You can even choose a theme to make it extra-special. Start by designing your own invitations and decorations. Then, follow the recipes for making a great cup of tea, simple cucumber and other creative sandwiches, shortbread bars, and more tasty treats. What kind of party are we going to have? A Mad Hatter Tea, Teddy Bear Picnic, Garden Party, Fairy Tea, or one just with your dolls or your mom? Plus: crafts, games, boxed hostess tips, and delicious “tea party” quotes from favorite books, all shown in pictures that capture the timeless pleasures of this favorite little-girl event. A quintessential gift from grandmother to granddaughter.
